Sizzler Nation,
After careful thought and consideration, it is with a heavy heart that I come to you after having to make an Executive Decision to cancel our January 2021 ABA season. As of Thanksgiving week in both Kansas and Missouri, we have almost 450,000 cases and over 5000 deaths due to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision was made based on the ongoing rise in numbers as well as recommendations from the medical professionals saying that indoor sports should not be played without some clear safety guidelines. Currently, our league has left decisions to be made on the individual owners and while our team may practice good safety measures, I cannot guarantee that the teams we play will be following similar guidelines nor can we control what happens outside of Sizzler practices and games. This decision is difficult for many reasons, but it will give me a great peace of mind knowing that I am doing my part in reducing the spread of a potentially deadly virus in my community. This will give me some time to focus on fundraising for the organization.
I am not comfortable enough with the medical information or lack thereof in regards to me understanding and/or implementing proper protocols and procedures necessary to keep everyone safe and avoid spreading the coronavirus. This is not something that I want to gamble on; life is too precious and with the numbers of infected increasing daily, it is unlikely that our season would be uninterrupted by potential exposures. As an organization, we cannot afford to start and stop an already abbreviated season as it would be more of a detriment as opposed to a benefit in the foreseeable future being a small market sports team. The health and well-being of our players, families and fans are important enough for me to take this stance.
Some will understand and some will not and I get it. I cannot please everyone but I choose to be safe and to keep my players, staff and families safe by not subjecting them to something that we cannot control. Stay in touch as we continue to update our website.
We are looking forward to our forthcoming, 2021-2022 season. (View schedule) Your support is and will be appreciated!
Stay safe and healthy...
