ABA Game Rules
Sportsmanship
  • There will be consistent and universal enforcement of sporting behavior with a ZERO tolerance for taunting and baiting.

3-D Rule
The "3D" rule is in affect when the offensive team loses possession of the ball while the ball has back court status.
If the offensive team does not establish ball control in the front court, the "3D light" will remain in effect. (The light is located on the scorers table.) -- When the light is ON, an “additional point” is added to the point value of the field goal. Consequently:
  • two-point baskets count as 3
  • three-point baskets count as 4
  • When the defense commits a foul within 3D, the number of free throws will also be increased by one.
  • If the defensive team receives a technical foul in 3D, the light will remain on following the free throws.

The "3D" light remains on until the team scores, attempts a free throw for a personal foul or the other team gains control of the ball.

Half court violation is 7 seconds (in the NBA 8 seconds).
  • If a team is not successful in getting the ball over half court within 7 seconds it results in a turnover which initiates the "3D" light.

6th Foul Rule: Players may continue playing after receiving a 6th foul but, if that player commits additional fouls, the offended team will shoot a free throw and be awarded possession of the ball. (In other words, a player never fouls out but at the expense of giving an advantage to the offended team.) -- Any of the players on the offended team may shoot the free throw.

Back Down Rule: The purpose of the back down rule is to promote ball movement in the area below the free throw line. All 4 of the following elements must be present for a violation to occur. -- can't take more than 4 dribbles

The player:
  • must be dribbling (can't take more the 4 dribbles in a back down motion)
  • must be closely guarded within 6 feet
  • must have his back to the basket
  • must be below the free throw line, extended

Other Rules:
  • Two free throws after the eighth foul of each quarter.
  • No 1 & 1 free throws
  • 4-point field goals because the "Division" line.  ---
  • Goal tending is allowed... in other words, the ball can be touched or knocked off the rim.

Overtime: 3 minutes with 1 timeout (30 - seconds) per team.
  • ALL players are eligible to play in overtime to allow the best players to be on the floor.
The American Basketball Association (ABA) began in 1967; it then merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1976.  In 1999, the ABA again partnered with the NBA as a new and improved organization. Throughout the years, the league has adapted its rules with the game.

The ABA combines NCAA, FIBA and NBA rules to create the best show for the fans. The ABA was the creator of the 3-point shot which is now used by every other league. The ABA also has a rule focusing on defense called the "3D Rule."
